From First Believers to a European Powerhouse: Why Emmi AI Joining Mistral AI Matters

When we first partnered with Emmi AI, the world’s attention was fixed almost singularly on large language models. The breakthroughs were undeniable, and the momentum was real. But we believed something essential was being overlooked.

The next frontier of AI wasn’t just about generating language. It was about understanding the physical world.

Industries that define our economy - engineering, manufacturing - don’t operate in tokens and prompts. They operate in constraints, forces, and systems governed by physics. If AI was to truly transform these domains, it needed to go beyond fluency and into first-principles reasoning about the physical world. That conviction led us to Emmi AI early, when “Physics AI” was still an emerging idea rather than an established category.

That the company was founded by some of the brightest and most hard working minds we have ever encountered definitely was essential in a category that is flooded with attention, funding and very ambitious people. We were fortunate to work with both Dennis and Miks in the past and when Peter had his first conversations with Johannes, he was deeply impressed by his unique insights, breakthrough thinking and ambition to make a change.

From Hypothesis to Category Leader

What the Emmi team accomplished in just one year is nothing short of remarkable.

Starting as a seed-stage pioneer in Austria, they rapidly translated a bold thesis into working technology and then into market relevance. By fusing machine learning with rigorous physical modeling, Emmi showed that AI can move beyond approximation—toward accurately simulating, predicting, and optimizing real-world systems in ways traditional methods rarely could or would have taken weeks to do so.

In doing so, they didn’t just build a company—they helped define a category.

The Power of Complementarity

Now, Emmi AI is joining forces with Mistral AI, and the logic is clear.

Mistral has established itself as one of Europe’s most formidable builders of foundational AI models - the “brain.” Their systems are efficient, high-performing, and grounded in a distinctly European vision of openness and sovereignty.

Emmi brings something fundamentally different, and deeply complementary: “physical intuition.” Their models don’t just process information - they understand how systems behave in the real world.

Together, this combination unlocks something far more powerful than either could achieve alone. It creates the foundation for a vertically integrated, sovereign European AI stack, one capable of serving the most demanding industrial sectors. Aerospace, automotive, energy, industries where precision, reliability, and physical accuracy are not optional, but essential.

This is AI not just as a co-pilot for knowledge work, but as a true collaborator in engineering and design.

Building Europe’s Technological Future

For us at 3VC, this moment is not an endpoint, it’s a transition.

We are not “exiting” Emmi AI. We are becoming shareholders in Mistral AI, doubling down on a belief that has guided us from the beginning: Europe has both the talent and the responsibility to build its own technological future.

A future where AI is not only powerful, but grounded. Not only innovative, but sovereign. Not only competitive, but deeply connected to the real-world systems that shape our lives and economies.

From being the first believer in Emmi’s vision, to now supporting a broader European platform, this journey reflects exactly the kind of ambition we seek to back.

Because in the end, this isn’t just about one company or one merger.

It’s about building the intellectual and industrial infrastructure for the next era of AI, made in Europe, for the world.

Thank you Johannes, Dennis and Miks for making us part of your journey! Onwards and upwards!
